Richard Deatz....Trumpet

Richard Deatz, Louisville-based, began to perform around Louisville starting in junior high school. In additional to playing in the Waggener High School band, he played for 4 years in the All-County concert band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles and All-State concert band and orchestra. Richard was a member of the Louisville Youth Orchestra and travelled with the orchestra to Lausanne, Switzerland in 1971, as one of 3 orchestras selected to represent the United States in the International Festival of Youth Orchestras. Richard with other orchestra wind players formed a jazz band to raise money for the trip. By happenstance the band set up and played at an outdoor café in Lausanne and Donovan heard us and asked the band to back him for a concert that weekend. Richard was also selected in 1971 to represent Kentucky in the McDonald’s All American Band, marching in the Macy’s and Rose Bowl parades. After high school, Richard attended Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, the University of Louisville School of Music, and has continued to perform and record professionally in and out of Louisville for over 40 years.
